Designers need to ensure that Indigenous communities are not exploited or disadvantaged by the commercial representation of their culture. We acknowledge our professional and social responsibility to establish, maintain and promote ethical standards and principles.
One of our designers Andrea, recently discovered the joys of Hazelhurst Arts Centre in Gymea, south of Sydney. Tucked away in this quiet little suburb of the Sutherland Shire, this historic house-come-art gallery is a little-known gem. Andrea took a stroll around the lush gardens and snooped in the windows of the many glass-doored art studios and watched the kids get creative in their school holiday art workshops. After a coffee frappe (with impressive espresso ice cube) she had a wander through the current exhibition which was a very interesting exploration of feminism and surrealism.
Graphic design plays an important role in sign painting as you need to carefully plot out your sign. If you start at the left edge without a care in the world, you will likely run out of room or have typography that is not centred.
Sign painting was once upon a time, the gold standard of advertising in Australia. In Sydney, across NSW and beyond, hand-painted and hand-crafted signs advertised everything; beer, stocking, tailors, butchers, sales and directions. Now, with the rise of the large format inkjet plotter, vinyl substrates and computer generated graphic design, this beautifully-human and imperfect typographic art is teetering between going the way of the dodo, and becoming highly-desirable.
We love seeing our clients achieve wonderful things and this week we learned that Kirsty Jagger – who we worked with on Australian Security Industry Association Limited’s (ASIAL) Annual Report – has gone on to write and publish a novel. It was just published on July 4 2023 so it’s ‘hot off the press’ as we like to say in the printing world. Well done Kirsty!
