Beyond the exhibitions, what struck me most about LA was how design lives and breathes across the city itself. Walking through its neighbourhoods felt like wandering through an open-air gallery, with murals, architecture, and sculpture telling stories at every turn.
The murals were impossible to ignore, bold splashes of colour on the sides of buildings that made entire streetscapes feel alive. Some celebrated local culture, others tackled social issues, and a few were simply playful bursts of creativity. As a designer, I found it inspiring to see large-scale works becoming part of the everyday city fabric, a reminder that design has the power to transform public space and mood.

Staying at The Proper Hotel was another highlight. Its interiors are a masterclass in layering textures, patterns, and eras, with every corner offering a new design detail to discover. From vintage ceramics to bespoke furniture, it felt curated but never contrived, a balance that takes real creative skill. It reminded me of how design can be immersive, shaping not just how a space looks but how it makes you feel.

The city’s sculptures added yet another dimension. From sleek, modern installations in downtown plazas to whimsical pieces tucked into parks, they created moments of pause amid the chaos of LA life. I was particularly struck by how seamlessly these works engaged with their surroundings, some blending, others standing out intentionally, but all sparking reflection.
Experiencing LA this way reminded me that design inspiration doesn’t just come from exhibitions or studios, it’s everywhere, waiting to be noticed. For me, it was a fresh reminder to look up, slow down, and let creativity find you in unexpected places.
