Each December, the anticipation builds among those in the design realm as Pantone prepares to unveil its Colour of the Year, sparking discussions and setting trends. This year the announcement arrived revealing Pantone 13-103 Peach Fuzz as 2024’s official Colour of the Year.
Peach Fuzz
The name “Peach Fuzz” conjures thoughts of summer, comfort, and warmth. According to Pantone, it encapsulates the longing to nurture ourselves and others. Described as a velvety, gentle peach tone, it embodies an all-encompassing spirit that enriches the mind, body, and soul.
Given the current global climate, Pantone’s choice of this nurturing and empathy-evoking shade seems fitting. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone Colour Institute (https://www.pantone.com/color-consulting/about-pantone-color-institute), explains, “In selecting a hue that echoes our inherent desire for closeness and connection, we chose a colour radiating warmth and modern elegance – a shade resonating with compassion, offering a tactile embrace, effortlessly bridging the youthful with the timeless.”
Beyond its sweetness and youthful appeal, Peach Fuzz elegantly straddles two warm tones – pink and orange – signifying a new modernity. Eiseman emphasises its significance as “a cozy peach hue nestled between pink and orange, bringing a sense of belonging, inspiring recalibration and nurturing – an essence of calmness that allows us to be, feel, heal and flourish whether in the company of others or cherishing a solitary moment.”
Radiating lightness, airiness and a touch of romance, Peach Fuzz aims to infuse beauty and wellness into our increasingly digital world. Eiseman describes it as “poetic and romantic, a pristine peach tone with a vintage essence, rephrased for a contemporary ambiance.” Quite distinct from 2023’s vibrant Viva Magenta, its influence across fashion, design and art is eagerly anticipated.
A brief history
The Pantone Colour Institute initiated the Pantone Colour of the Year educational program back in 1999. Its aim was to spark dialogue about colour and involve the global design community as well as colour enthusiasts in vibrant conversations about hues. 2024 commemorates the 25th anniversary of Pantone’s Colour of the Year program. Originating in 1999 with Pantone 15-4020 Cerulean Blue (forever linked to that iconic scene in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’) , this annual revelation signifies a global expression of mood and attitude, often elevating a single shade into an iconic status. The anticipation builds to witness Peach Fuzz’s presence throughout 2024.
